Spartan Pups: Terry sets school record for TD passes in a game

Written by Mike W. on .

Damion Terry has been posting big numbers through his entire senior season, but now he has set the school record for touchdown passes in a game.

Terry threw for six touchdowns passes, breaking a record he held with another player, and ran for another score in a 61-19 win, as Erie Cathedral Prep moved to 8-0. He completed 11-of-16 passes for 263 yards.

Terry now has thrown for 2,135 passing yards and 31 touchdowns. He also has seven rushing touchdowns.

Delton Williams found the end zone twice on the receiving end of passes from Terry, one from 18 yards and one from 4 yards.

Q&A: Previewing the Wolverines with The Big House Report

Written by Mike W. on .

It's rivalry week, y'all. Throw almost anything out the window when it comes to the MSU-UM game, because anything can happen.

What makes this game even more special is the fans knowledge -- both fan bases know plenty about the opposing school's team in the current season.

To take it a little bit deeper, I got in touch with Joshua Henschke, who founded and writes for The Big House Report -- and does a great job covering all things UM football.

So, I asked him five questions -- and he asked me five -- and he helped give myself and all of you some better insight into the Wolverines. Here is what he had to say:

1. How has the development of Devin Gardner and Devin Funchess impacted the Michigan offense?

I think Devin Funchess has had the most significant impact on the Michigan offense. Granted, both positions were of need coming into this year, it was unknown how some of the returning kids would respond with greater roles. Gardner hasn't exactly "WOW'ed" the fans so far this year. But, this doesn't mean he's a slouch, either. Gardner is showing his natural athleticism and abilities by adapting to a position where he isn't very familiar with. He's validated the position switch with some pretty good plays and a few touchdowns.

I've always been a huge Funchess fan before he signed his LOI with Michigan. He's an absolute freak out on the field. With size, athleticism, and great hands, he is proving he can and will be a valuable piece down the road for Michigan. I think the coaching staff knew exactly what they were getting when they recruited him, so it's not a huge surprise he's excelling at the tight end position thus far.

In terms of both of them together impacting the offense, I think they've provided Denard Robinson two tall receivers down field. Michigan has needed some size since Brady Hoke has come to town (as they are still playing with what is left over from the Rodriguez era) in the wide receiver and tight end positions. Though Funchess doesn't add the weight to be a pure blocking tight end, they're offensive contributions have justified their playing time. I'm excited to see what's in store for the future.

2. The Wolverines pass defense ranks second in the nation...who has stepped up after Blake Countess was lost for the season?

Before I get into the defensive backs, a lot of the credit for the amazing pass defense numbers goes to Jake Ryan and his linebacking core. Mattison loves to let them loose and blitz, and it has become very effective. Giving the legacy jersey numbers to Jake Ryan (47) and Desmond Morgan (48) wasn't on a whim. They are legitimate ball players that are very deserving of that honor.

I think senior J.T. Floyd has done what he has had to do in order to secure the top defensive back position. He has done a great job shutting down his man and hasn't been giving up much of the deep ball (which has been a problem in the past) lately. Another surprising kid to emerge is Sophomore Raymon Taylor. He has done a great job to fill very big shoes left by the injury to Countess. Taylor has already secured two picks and hasn't made any costly mistakes. The combination of Countess and Taylor is going to be great in the future years.

When you mention the defensive backs, you can't forget about Senior Jordan Kovacs. No matter how highly touted Countess is, Kovacs is the heart-and-soul of the defensive backs. He is their leader, and proves it with his play on the field. Kovacs has done a fine job as well. He will be sorely missed.

3. Michigan State has bottled up Denard Robinson in previous meetings, what do you think Al Borges might have up his sleeve? How do you expect Michigan to attack the MSU defense, which is solid against the run?

I don't think now is the time to be "cute" against Michigan State. Just play smash mouth football. Of course, knowing Borges, you never know what he's about to pull from the booth. So I'd definitely expect a trick play or two. Considering his trick plays pathetically failed against Notre Dame, I'm hoping he stays away from it.

I think Denard needs to keep doing what he has been against Purdue and Illinois. Make smart throws and don't force anything down field. Denard is going to get his touches, it's going to be important to be patient and try not to force the run. Another factor is the inept play of Fitzgerald Toussaint as of late. He hasn't exactly grasped the starting running back position as he did last season. With that being said, I'd expect to see a lot of sophomore Thomas Rawls out there Saturday. Rawls is a very physical back who loves to run through you. The combination of the two seem to be effective. Let's see if it can last another week.

4. In your mind, what does this game mean to Michigan now? As the rivalry seems to have grown of late, is there a bigger meaning for the Wolverines?

I don't think this game has changed in terms of importance, considering it's part of the "big three" in rivalry games (Ohio State and Notre Dame being the other two). We're in-state rivals, it's always going to be important. I think the mindset around Ann Arbor is pretty simple: finish them. It's time to get the "monkey off their backs", so to speak. Four years has been quite some time to lose the Paul Bunyan Trophy, I think they're getting desperate to get it back. I think that's the biggest meaning or storyline for Michigan. Is the game on Saturday a must win? I say yes, simply because Michigan State is just another Big Ten opponent at the end of the day. If they want to make it to Indianapolis they must win these conference games.

5. What do you think is the x-factor in the matchup this weekend?

I think the biggest storyline is how the defense can respond to shutting down La'veon Bell, and how Denard will perform against the Spartans. It's not a secret, Bell is really, really good. There's no other way you can look at it. If the defense can shut down Bell, this makes the game change completely, as Michigan State will have to rely on Maxwell's arm to make plays. Can Maxwell get it done? We'll find out Saturday.

In order to top off the "Legend of Denard Robinson", he needs a victory against Michigan State and a Big Ten Championship. Let's focus on what's infront of us first. Denard has played poorly against Michigan State during his career, I'm not going to sugar coat it, he sucked last year. If Robinson can play like he did against Ohio State last year (arguably the best overall performance of his career) then he pretty much cements himself as a Michigan legend. But, he needs to step up. He can't play like the Robinson Michigan fans saw against Notre Dame, the MSU defense will destroy him.

I think both storylines are important, and will make for a very entertaining game this Saturday in Ann Arbor.

Thanks to Joshua for taking the time to help preview the Wolverines heading into this weekend's showdown for the Paul Bunyan Trophy. You can follow him on Twitter @JoshuaHenschke. The Big House Report is also on Twitter @TBHReport.

Spartan Pups: Jay Harris makes highlight-worthy play in win

Written by Mike W. on .

As the current Spartan wide receivers struggle to make big plays, the pass-catching recruits are having no such troubles.Jay Harris

Downingtown East's Jay Harris (2013) and Grand Rapids Christian's Drake Harris (2014) both are having tremendous seasons for their high school teams, and last week, Jay Harris made a big play in his team's 37-0 win.

According to the Daily Local News, Jay Harris appeared to be stopped after hauling in a screen pass, but changed direction and broke three tackles and was gone down the sideline for a 70-yard touchdown.

“It was a screen pass in the flat and I had a tunnel and I actually went to the wrong hole and then someone had me, but I broke free,” Harris said to the Daily Local News. “Then, I just crossed the field and my blockers did a great job for me. They led me down the field and did a great job.”

Through seven games, Jay Harris has 36 catches for 539 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Drake Harris continued putting up big numbers as he had 10 catches for 205 yards and two touchdowns in a 38-16 win against Forest Hills Central. He now has 56 catches for 1,112 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Cincinnati St. Xavier receiver Trey Kilgore returned from an injury and had a 20-yard touchdown catch.

Erie Cathedral Prep's Damion Terry continued his great season passing the ball, going 28-of-40 passing for 352 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-9 win. He also ran for 40 yards and a touchdown.

CP is undefeated this season at 7-0. Terry now has thrown for 1,872 yards on 126-of-176 passing and 25 touchdowns to just two interceptions.

The latest MSU commit Delton Williams helped CP to the win with seven catches for 63 yards and a 5-yard touchdown run.

Solon's Darian Hicks had six catches for 109 yards, including touchdown grabs of 32 and 34 yards.

Flint Carman-Ainsworth returned to its winning ways after suffering its first defeat and running back Gerald Holmes had a touchdown on six carries and 34 yards in the 49-0 victory. Holmes has 61 carries for 722 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Holmes' future backfield mate R.J. Shelton (Beaver Dam, Wisc) carried 15 times for 80 yards and a touchdown in a 33-10 loss, the final game of the season for Beaver Dam. He eclipsed the 5,000-yard mark for his career in the game. He wrapped up the season with 1,302 yards rushing on 149 carries with 15 touchdowns.

Athlete Williams commits to MSU, joins teammate Terry

Written by Mike W. on .

Michigan State found its quarterback for the class of 2013 from Erie (Pa.) Cathedral Prep, and now it added an explosive athlete from the same school.

Standout Delton Williams committed to Michigan State on Tuesday over West Virginia, joining Damion Terry as future Spartans.

A video of Williams' commitment can be seen here, courtesy of The Erie Times-News.

He is coming off a huge game last Friday in which he caught 11 passes for 139 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 139 yards on 12 carries, including an 85-yard touchdown run.

Williams is a 6-2, 205-pound safety/athlete, who was named to the Pennsylvania Sportwriters' Class AAA All-State team as a defensive back in his junior season -- the only junior among the 12 players on the defensive honorees. Williams totaled nearly 1,900 all-purpose yards and 13 touchdowns in just eight games as a junior.

His other offers included Boston College, Nebraska, Penn State, Pitt and West Virginia. He is the 14th commitment in the class of 2013 and is rated a three-star recruit by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports.

Spartan Pups: Shelton breaks 1,000-yard mark

R.J. Shelton is an explosive play maker -- that much has been clear from any highlights or accounts of the Beaver Dam running backs' abilities.rj_shelton_247sportsBeaver Dam's R.J. Shelton broke the 1,000-yard mark Friday. (247sports Photo)

On Friday, he put up another big game and broke the 1,000-yard mark for the season.

Shelton rushed for 232 yards on 16 carries and scored four touchdowns in a 34-6 win. Shelton now has 1,222 yards on 134 carries and 14 rushing touchdowns this season.

Last year, Shelton rushed for 2,045 yards on 218 attempts (9.39 yards per attempt) and 32 touchdowns as a junior on his way to being named second-team all-state.

Unlike Shelton, Flint Carman-Ainsworth running back Gerald Holmes struggled in a 32-7 loss to Flint Powers. Holmes had just 15 yards on eight carries, making his season totals 688 yards on 55 carries and 10 touchdowns.

The loss was C-A's first of the season.

Spartans-Buckeyes becoming heated since Meyer's arrival

Written by Mike W. on .

When Urban Meyer was hired last November to be the new football coach at Ohio State, it didn't take long for him to get under the skin of opposing coaches and fans.MeyerMillerMSU_0Urban Meyer embraced Braxton Miller on Saturday, but he and Mark Dantonio didn't shake hands.

Wisconsin's Bret Bielema criticized Meyer's recruiting tactics -- which cost the Badgers four-star OL Kyle Dodson. Four Penn State commits flipped to Ohio State after Meyer's arrival.

And, arguably Michigan State's best recruit, defensive end Se'Von Pittman, flipped to Ohio State, too. When all was said in done, eight of the 10 recruits Meyer brought to Ohio State after his hiring were committed to other schools before his hiring.

Pat Narduzzi dropped this little number: "Jim Tressel and Mark Dantonio would never call or talk to each other's commitments. People Coach Dantonio knows well don't come in and take players away. When you do, you lose friendships over that."

Well, it turns out recruiting isn't the only thing that Spartan coaches find Ohio State showing unethical practicies in -- a game-tape issue came up following Saturday's 17-16 loss in East Lansing.

“We had tape cut off all week, where they changed the tape, I’m not gonna lie to you,” Narduzzi said. “They send you tape and they’ve got it all cut off and you don’t get to see shifts or motions or anything else.”

Spartan Pups: Terry continues to put up big numbers

Future MSU quarterback Damion Terry has consistently had big games this year, but arguably had his best so far last weekend.damion_terry_go_erie_youngstownDamion Terry runs for a touchdown against Youngstown Ursuline. Terry had seven total touchdown in the game. (GoErie.com Photo)

The Erie Cathedral Prep star threw for 310 yards and five touchdowns on 21-of-28 passing. He also ran for two more touchdowns, racking up 80 yards on 11 carries in the 47-7 win agaisnt Youngstown Ursuline.

The kicker? He only played four offensive plays in the second half -- but one was a 43-yard touchdown run.

He now has completed 80-of-106 passes (75.4 percent) for 1,327 yards. He has thrown 18 touchdown passes and ran for five more, while throwing just one interception.

Two of the players who likely will be on the receiving end of Terry's passes one day had solid games Friday.

Expect to see ... Ohio State edition

Big Ten season is upon us and it starts off in a BIG way.denicos_allen_ohio_state_presswireDenicos Allen made highlight reels with this sack against Ohio State last year. The MSU defense will look to bottle up Braxton Miller again. (US Presswire Photo)

College Gameday is coming to East Lansing, as are the Ohio State Buckeyes.

The Spartans took last year's game in Columbus 10-7 behind a dominant defensive performance -- nine sacks.

This year's game could look a lot different, with Braxton Miller established as the Ohio State quarterback and Urban Meyer at the helm. Michigan State also is a different team, but can it still take down the Buckeyes?

Here is what to look for Saturday (3:30 p.m., ABC):

Q&A: Previewing the Buckeyes with TheOzone

Written by Mike W. on .

With the Buckeyes coming to East Lansing this Saturday, it is time to take a look into what Ohio State brings to the table this year under new coach Urban Meyer.

braxton_miller_michigan_stateLast year the Spartans managed to bottle up Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller. Finding a way to stop him this year could be a key for MSU. (Toledo Blade Photo)

Quarterback Braxton Miller has drawn a lot of early praise -- and has accounted for 14 touchdowns -- but the Buckeyes have more than just Miller going for them early in the year as they finished the nonconference season undefeated at 4-0.

To help shed some light on Ohio State, Brandon Castel of TheOzone.net was kind enough to answer a few questions for me and all of you.

Here's the questions and Brandon's answers:

1. Braxton Miller has looked like a different quarterback this season. What has been the biggest improvement in his game?

That’s a great question. A better question, if you’re looking back at that game against Michigan State a year ago would be where hasn’t he improved. By his own admission, Miller wasn’t really ready to play in that game last year, and it will probably go down as one of the worst in his career by the time he leaves Ohio State.

Where he has really improved this year is his decision-making. He still struggles to make the right read at times, but he’s finding the right spots to put the football and he’s learned when to run the ball and when to hang in the pocket. He’s such an instinctual runner that it’s hard to say he’s improved in that area, but he’s certainly much more comfortable with what he can do with his legs.
